In the competitive world of construction, excellence is not just a goal—it’s a standard. Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recognizes this through its prestigious Top Performers list. To qualify, contractors must achieve Gold status or higher in ABC’s STEP Safety Management System. This system helps the best-performing contractors achieve incident rates nearly seven times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average, according to ABC’s Safety Performance Report.

Moreover, most of these honorees must earn ABC’s Accredited Quality Contractor credential. This credential is a testament to their excellence in quality, safety performance, talent management, craft and management education, and community relations.

The Heart of America chapter is proud to name the four local members who have earned this highest achievement: Crossland Construction, hth companies, Lee Mechanical, and Killian Construction. These companies exemplify the dedication and excellence that ABC stands for, setting a high bar for the industry.

Crossland Construction was founded in 1940 and has remained a family company since. They offer a variety of services, taking pride in owning their craftmanship. Crossland Construction’s mission is to have zero accidents and zero injuries on all jobsites each year, calling this initiative Drive to Zero. Furthermore, they are active in their community with Crossland Cares which channels this collective potential into purposeful campaigns, volunteer endeavors, and charitable contributions.

Headquartered in Union, Missouri, hth companies provides industrial services to customers throughout the Midwest. Founded in 1984 as a merit shop mechanical insulation company, they have grown to offer a wide array of services including scaffold erection, mechanical insulation, industrial cleaning services, painting, coating, and mechanical maintenance. “Guided by the core values of integrity, people, service, and advancement, our daily commitment is to create a safe environment for employees and deliver high-quality solutions for our customers.”

Lee Mechanical Contractors, Inc was founded in 1985 by Ernest L. Gibson with fewer than thirty employees. Motivated by his steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction and providing quality service at a fair price, he built the company into the multi-generational family business it is today employing over 400 tradesmen and operating in more than 14 states.  With over 30 years of experience in industrial and maintenance construction, Lee Mechanical is proud of the reputation it has earned with its customers.

J.P. Killian founds Killian Construction with his son Bob in 1948 and over the last 75 years, Killian Construction has turned into an award-winning commercial construction services provider. They employ nearly 100 associates, partner with more than 15,000 subcontractors, and have completed projects in 28 states. Killian Construction has received numerous accolades, including 20 ABC Heart of America Excellence in Construction Awards.
